VHFA recently completed a comprehensive update of HousingData.org, improving this vital public resource for housing advocacy in Vermont. Since 2003, VHFA’s HousingData.org has been the premier online source for high quality data and research about Vermont’s housing landscape, with all information available for free to the public.

Resources found on HousingData.org regularly inform Vermont housing policy, including use as the primary source of the recent 2025 Vermont Housing Needs Assessment and as the basis for recently released 2030 and 2050 state housing targets.
In this recent update, the site’s layout and search function have been significantly improved and modernized. Through these changes, HousingData’s three core site areas remain:
- Community Data Profiles: Data about Vermont’s housing market, available at the town, county, and state level;
- Housing Resource Toolbox: Strategies and research to support local affordable housing advocacy and development;
- Directory of Affordable Rental Housing: A listing of all rental apartments in Vermont that were built or rehabbed using state or federal affordable housing funding.
With the new site format, we are also able to build new ways of increasing public access to various forms of housing data. Some exciting new resources on the site include:
- The new Home Building section in the Community Profile provides insight into current and historic changes to the state housing stock. This section also includes the VT DHCD Housing Development dashboard, created to track the number of new homes built in relation to state housing needs.
- Also in the Community Profiles, some new demographics indicators include components of population change and population pyramids with projections through 2050. Demographic factors such as aging and migration are likely to significantly impact Vermont in the future.
- New sections of the Housing Resource toolbox, including the Housing Glossary and the Publications pages, providing both baseline definitions and in depth reports on various aspects of affordable housing in Vermont.
- The search function in the Directory of Affordable Rental Housing (DoARH) has been improved to make it easier to find information about publicly-funded housing developments at the town and county levels
VHFA’s Research & Community Relations department is always working to improve
