VHFA submitted comments today to the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) on its Plan on Aging, a federally required five year plan regarding the state's elderly population. The state's draft plan is clear that the fastest growing population is frail elders who most likely need supportive services, and that Vermont's elders overwhelmingly prefer to live independently. What is not clear in the draft is an identification of resources directed toward community based services and housing to respond to this growing demand.
Wharf Lane featured in Seven Days
Burlington's Wharf Lane Apartments was the subject of an article in this week's Seven Days newspaper.
VHFA Executive Director Sarah Carpenter spoke with writer Shay Totten about the 37-unit project that might lose its affordability status if the owner sells to the private market.
"We’re committed to make this work because this is too important a housing resource to lose," Sarah says in the piece.
Wharf Lane is home to 44 people — many elderly or disabled.
Wells Fargo signs on as platinum sponsor of housing conference
Wells Fargo has joined the list of sponsors of the 2010 Vermont Statewide Housing Conference coming Nov. 18.
The company became a "platinum" sponsor of the event, the highest level of sponsorship.
There are three other platinum sponsors, so far:
- TD Bank
- US Bank
- Winooski Housing Authority
Thanks also to Opportunities Credit Union, which has also joined the ranks of sponsors.
Proctor Place restored; affordability extended
Proctor Place, a 12-unit elderly housing development in Rutland County's Town of Proctor, is the first to use funds from VHFA's new pre-development loan program, funded by the MacArthur Foundation. (See our Mar. 31 post, "VHFA makes available MacArthur funds.")
A total of $236,000 from the program is helping restore the historic Main Street building following a fire last August. Work is nearly complete.
