Last Friday, the U.S. House passed H.R. 4213, the “Tax Extenders Bill.”
The legislation provides $1 billion for the National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF), which will enable communities to build, rehabilitate, and preserve housing for very low income households.
The legislation also includes $2.5 billion for the TANF Emergency Contingency Fund (ECF), which provides benefits, cash assistance, subsidized employment, and short-term assistance to low-income families.
The ECF was enacted under the Recovery Act and was set to expire Sept. 30. The bill extends it to Sept. 30, 2011.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has posted the Choice Neighborhood FY10 Notice of Funding Availability Pre-Notice. It gives potential applicants guidance prior to the Choice Neighborhoods funding notice, which will be published this summer.
The guidance offers advance details regarding the application process to compete for funds through this pilot program.
The Huffington Post yesterday published a piece by Deborah De Santis, President/CEO of the Corporation for Supportive Housing, titled "Honoring our Veterans can Begin With Housing."
"As this Memorial Day weekend approaches, it is unfathomable that so many men and women who've served in our nation's military have no roof over their heads," she writes.
"That any veteran should be homeless is tragedy enough, but equally alarming is that data shows veterans are overrepresented in the total homeless population."
