Twin Pines Housing Trust is offering a "Secrets of Homebuying Workshop" on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Participants will learn how to apply for a mortgage with special financing, closing costs, work with a realtor, budgeting, credit and homeowners insurance. Fee is $65 per household.

NPR interviews Secretary Castro about transition to new HUD leadership
HUD Secretary Julian Castro described his hopes for the transition to new leadership during an interview with NPR yesterday.
A congressional confirmation hearing, scheduled for Thursday, will provide an opportunity for nominee Ben Carson to share his goals for U.S. housing policy.
Castro met with Vermont housing officials in Burlington last summer and attended the opening of the new Bright Street affordable rental housing complex.
January 5th is Homelessness Awareness Day and Memorial Vigil
Please join us at the State House in Montpelier on January 5 to renew Vermont's commitment to ending homelessness. The day will include time to meet with lawmakers and experts to discuss effective strategies Vermont could use to conquer remaining challenges in ending homelessness. A vigil will also be held to remember those who have died without homes and the hundreds of Vermonters still searching for safe, secure housing they can afford.
The Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition is co-sponsoring this event with the Vermont Coalition to End Homelessness.
VHFA helps spread warmth to area children and teens
With the outdoor temperature near zero, VHFA’s Steve Gronlund headed out this afternoon to deliver candy-stuffed gloves, mittens and hats for at least 100 kids to the King Street Center. The Edlund Company partnered with VHFA this year to collect gear donations from staff and friends.
The mitten drive is a much-loved annual tradition that is part of VHFA’s year-long schedule of charitable activities.

Need an affordable apartment or know someone who does? There are vacancies in 28 different apartment complexes across the state, according to the Vermont Directory of Affordable Rental Housing.
Bennington celebrates rehabilitation of historic buildings through affordable housing
Community leaders and housing partners came together last week to celebrate the completion of renovations to historic buildings in downtown Bennington. Developed and managed by Shires Housing, the buildings include 26 affordable apartments for low-income residents of all ages.
Federal and state housing credits provided by VHFA covered forty percent of the costs of rehabbing the buildings. Other sources of funding include the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, the HOME program, the Federal Home Loan Bank’s Affordable Housing Program, the federal historic tax credit and the Vermont Community Development Program.
Literacy program opportunities for general occupancy rental housing and other service providers
The Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF) is now accepting applications for its At-Risk Children grant. This free grant opportunity is open to social service providers, early childhood education programs, daycare centers, school-based programs such as ELL classrooms and afterschool programs, family centers, community organizations, shelters, low-income housing and other groups throughout Vermont and New Hampshire that serve low-income or at-risk infants and children up to age 12 (or a segment of that age range).
