As planning for the 2010 Vermont Statewide Housing Conference continues, we've turned our attention to the educational workshops. We've been monitoring the news, the State House, Congress, and local communities to find great topics that will be of interest to the diverse audience we expect that day. There is a tremendous line up drafted, but we need more!

VHFA Policy and Planning Manager Maura Collins will teach a graduate-level housing policy course at the University of Vermont in Burlington.
The course will be offered in the Fall 2010 semester.

Granted, Vermont isn't Boston, but a recent story in the Boston Globe shows people in Boston who move distances in search of affordable housing often sacrifice those savings in higher transportation costs.
The story, based on a study from the Urban Land Institute, a Washington, D.C., research group, quotes Henry Cisneros (pictured), Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton administration and an institute board member:
According to U-Haul International Inc., Vermont was one of the most moved-to states in the nation for 2009.
The company's annual "Top 10 U.S. Growth States" report shows Vermont is at the top of the list for states receiving 5,000 to 20,000 new families — with 16.67 percent more families moving in than moving out.
Vermont overtook Maine, which held the top spot for the two previous years.
For states receiving more than 20,000 families in 2009, Kentucky experienced the greatest growth: 5.76 percent.
