Statewide Housing Conference

BURLINGTON-The message to the hundreds of professionals gathered at the Hilton Burlington yesterday was loud and clear: A stable life starts with stable housing.  Scholars Kathryn Edin and Luke Shaefer described the poignant interviews they had with poor families before writing their renowned book “$2.00 A Day: Living on Next to Nothing in America.” 

“When we asked what they needed most, people consistently said they wanted a home of their own and a job paying $10-$12 hour.” Without the safety of four walls, poor families live in a highly volatile “toxic alchemy” of threats and obstacles, Edin explained.

A legislative breakfast reception on the 15th is devoted to connecting conference participants with at least 14 state legislators and staff from all 3 Vermont federal legislative offices. The winner of the Vermont governor's race has also been invited to speak at the conference. 

In addition to other exciting new features, the Vermont Statewide Housing Conference on November 14-15 will be showcasing the most dedicated and innovative projects in our communities. "Projects" could be homeownership or rental housing developments, planning efforts, collaborations, initiatives, or other coordinated efforts. Conference attendees will learn about these projects from concept to reality via posters on display throughout the conference.

Since 2002, Vermont's Statewide Housing Conference has celebrated the achievements and service of individuals and organizations by recognizing them through the Housing Hero Award.

This year we are expanding our awards and will be naming a Legislative Housing Hero and an Innovation & Impact Housing Hero. The Conference Committee is seeking nominations for both awards before the end of the day today, October 7, 2016.
