Paul Dettman will retire this week as Burlington Housing Authority’s (BHA) Executive Director, a post he held for the past 20 years. With Dettman at the helm, the Burlington Housing Authority’s role has grown to managing over 600 affordable apartments and providing rental assistance to 1,700 low-income Chittenden County residents. In addition, Dettman partnered with VHFA to preserve the affordability of many area apartments when original federal contracts from the 1970s and 1980s expired and presented owners with opportunities to sell the buildings and change their use. The most recent properties to benefit from Dettman’s effective preservation strategies are Burlington’s Bobbin Mill and Wharf Lane apartment buildings.

Canal Street Veterans Housing celebrates 5 years of success
Five years after opening its doors to homeless veterans, Canal Street Veterans Housing is celebrating its success in moving residents to permanent housing and employment. Eighty-seven percent of all residents moved into permanent housing after leaving Canal Street and all of those who were able to work were employed.
Canal Street is a two-year transitional housing program for formerly homeless veterans. It is the only VA housing provider in Vermont that allows families of veterans to join them in their program. In 2015, the residents of Canal Street's 28 units included 8 children and two spouses.

The Village Movement is the concept of developing nonprofit villages for those age 50 and older, in which they can age at home safely and as part of a community.
Scholarships available for students in housing financed through Housing Vermont
The Housing Vermont Scholarship Fund will award up to $10,000 to residents of housing affiliated with Housing Vermont. Students are eligible for a renewable scholarship of up to $2,500 for tuition, books, childcare, transportation, or other expenses related to enrolling in a program.

Temporary housing available for Vermonters at risk of homelessness during weekend's extreme cold
Vermonters at risk of homelessness should call 2-1-1 to arrange for temporary housing during the extreme cold this weekend, Governor Peter Shumlin advised Friday.
The Vermont Division of Emergency Management & Homeland Security is issuing wind chill warnings for most of the state from 4 a.m. Saturday through 7 p.m. Sunday, with wind chill temperatures expected to plunge to between 25 and 40 below zero.
