VHFA bids a fond farewell to Martha Fidalgo
VHFA-ers gathered yesterday to celebrate Martha Fidalgo’s last week as VHFA’s Human Resources/Office Manager. She will assume a new human resources position at Country Home Products in Vergennes.
Multifamily Programs Director Sam Falzone read an “Ode to Martha” which he’d scribed after hearing of her plans to leave VHFA.
Executive Director Sarah Carpenter noted how much Martha’s grace and effectiveness would be missed.
How negative equity affects unemployment rates
A study looked at how borrowers who owe more than their home is worth (underwater) might be limited in their ability to move because of their housing situation. This can perpetuate a high unemployment rate if homeowners can’t move for economic reasons. The report’s authors found that “house lock” definitely decreases a household’s mobility options, but in aggregate has had a negligible effect on the nation’s unemployment rate.

Cynthia Reid promoted to VHFA's Assistant Director of Development
VHFA's Executive Director Sarah Carpenter announced Cynthia Reid of Huntington has been promoted to Assistant Director of Development at Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA).
Development Director, Joe Erdelyi, commented “The promotion is in recognition of Cindy’s hard work, dedication and her contributions to the Department and the Agency as a whole.” Reid joined VHFA in 1996.
Angus Chaney joins AHS Secretary's office
Angus Chaney is joining the office of Agency of Human Services Secretary Doug Racine to focus on an integrated approach to housing and homelessness. In his new role, Angus will focus on the development and implementation of a statewide agenda to address the issues of homelessness, the development of housing retention programs and an integrated approach to the state’s housing needs.
Brittany Riley joins VHFA as Administrative Assistant
Executive Director Sarah Carpenter announced Brittany Riley of South Burlington, VT has joined Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA) as Administrative Assistant.
Riley was most recently employed at Vermont Gas Systems as Front Desk Receptionist. Prior to that she served administrative roles at Women Helping Battered Women and Essex Alliance Church.
Timothy Collins joins VHFA as SQL Report Writer and Analyst
Executive Director Sarah Carpenter announced Monday that Tim Collins of Burlington, VT has joined VHFA as SQL Report Writer and Analyst.
Tim holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering Technology earned at Vermont Technical College. He brings vast information technology experience ranging from application development to database management and web design.
Rick Jean, VHFA’s Manager of Information Technology, commented, “we look forward to having Tim round out our IT team, specializing in SQL database management and report writing.”

Robert Purcell joins VHFA as financial analyst
VHFA's Executive Director, Sarah Carpenter, announced that Robert Purcell of Georgia, VT has joined Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA) as Financial Analyst.
Purcell brings vast accounting and analytical experience ranging from accounting positions at Wells Fargo to account management in the captive insurance industry. He also brings strong systems and process improvement skills.
Purcell holds a Masters in Public Administration earned at The University of Vermont and a B.A. in Business earned at The University of Colorado.
Tom Connors, VHFA’s Chief Financial Officer, commented, “we look forward to having Rob apply his skills to some of the Agency’s more complex applications like rebate arbitrage and the financial forecast.”
