The Common Rental Application for Housing in Vermont has been revised based on feedback from housing managers, applicant experiences and the state’s evolving information needs.  The revised application was announced by Executive Director Sarah Carpenter last week at the annual conference of the Vermont Housing Managers Association.

Since it was first developed in 2011, the common rental application has been streamlining the process of applying for assisted rental housing in Vermont.  All new rental housing receiving housing credit funding or loans from VHFA are automatically required to use the common rental application.

The most substantive change is that the application now asks applicants to indicate whether they are currently homeless or at risk of homelessness.  It also asks applicants to review HUD’s definitions and identify the type of homelessness their household has been experiencing.

Other new information now collected on the common application include:

  • Marital status
  • Full-time versus part-time occupancy in unit of each household member
  • Expected additions to the household in the next 12 months
  • Absent household members
  • Prior states of residency
  • Features needed for reasonable accommodation
  • Student status detail

The newly revised application is available on VHFA's website and through the Directory of Affordable Rental Housing section of the Vermont Housing Data website.  Comments and questions about may be sent directly to Kim Roy, VHFA’s Assistant Director for Multifamily Programs.
