The Crown Point Board of REALTORS® (CBPR) will be distributing a sizable donation from Okemo Mountain Resort's philanthropic Community Challenge fund to local residents still suffering as a result of Tropical Storm Irene.
Melinda Bussino, Vermont housing hero, suffers fatal heart attack
Melinda Bussino, long-time advocate for homeless Vermonters, died Sunday after suffering a heart attack a week earlier. She was 65.
Melinda was the Executive Director of the Brattleboro Area Drop-In Center, a day center and community food shelf for the homeless and lonely, which she helped found in the late 1980s.
Her years of commitment and leadership providing comfort and shelter to homeless Vermonters, and her tireless advocacy on their behalf, was widely recognized. In 2008, Melinda won the Housing Hero award at VHFA's statewide, biennial Vermont Housing Conference.
Treasury announces $35 million in New Markets Tax Credit awards for Vermont
Emphasizing the importance of economic recovery in distressed areas, U.S. Department of the Treasury's announced last week the award of $3.6 billion in New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) nationwide, including $35 million for Vermont projects.
The NMTC, established by Congress in December 2000, permits individual and corporate taxpayers to receive a credit against federal income taxes for making equity investments in vehicles known as Community Development Entities. Vermont Rural Ventures, Inc., operated by Housing Vermont, was selected along with 69 other entities, to distribute the 2011 tax credits. Over 314 entites applied nationwide.
Benefit for residents with flooding at Cedar’s Edge apartments
A calcutta and silent auction to benefit the residents whose apartments were flooded just before Christmas will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 6pm.
Tickets are $30 for one person and $10 for each additional person in your group. Silent auction items will also be available, followed by a live band.
The event will be held at the St. John's Club is located at the end of Lakeside Avenue in Burlington. Proceeds will be used to support the tenants who were the hardest hit when a coupling crack in a fire suppression and alarm system at Cedar’s Edge, a new apartment building on Susie Wilson Road in Essex, caused the building to flood on December 20.
Architectural award goes to Gossen Bachman Architects for Windsor's Union Square
Gossen Bachman Architects, the designers of Union Square, containing 58 affordable and market rate rental apartments in Windsor, Vermont, have been awarded a John M. Clancy Award for Socially Responsible Housing from the Boston Society of Architects for its recent renovation.
Angus Chaney joins AHS Secretary's office
Angus Chaney is joining the office of Agency of Human Services Secretary Doug Racine to focus on an integrated approach to housing and homelessness. In his new role, Angus will focus on the development and implementation of a statewide agenda to address the issues of homelessness, the development of housing retention programs and an integrated approach to the state’s housing needs.
HUD Consolidated Plan public hearing on Feb. 13
The State of Vermont’s Department of Economic, Housing and Community Development will conduct a public hearing in preparation of developing its 2012 Action Plan for the HUD Consolidated Plan for 2010-2015, to hear views about the State’s housing and community development needs, including priority non-housing community development needs and development of proposed activities, and review past performance related to its HUD Consolidated Plan.
