Residents, staff, and supporters gathered in Brattleboro last week for a ribbon-cutting celebration at Great River Terrace. The project, sponsored Windham & Windsor Housing Trust (WWHT), created 22 affordable apartments for homeless and very low income Vermonters. The $4.6 million project was funded in part by federal and state tax credits and a construction loan awarded by VHFA.

Parkview Apartments in Newport receive energy-efficient updates
Residents of Parkview Apartments in Newport celebrated energy-efficient improvements to their apartment complex at a ribbon-cutting ceremony held last week. The $3.1 million project was overseen by RuralEdge, which owns the twelve affordable units. The project was supported by Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA), which awarded state and federal tax credits as well as a construction loan.
Heritage Courts senior housing celebrates major renovation
Residents of Heritage Courts in Poultney are celebrating the recent renovation of their apartment complex. The $3.1 million project was managed by the Housing Trust of Rutland County, which owns the property. The project was funded in large part by VHFA, which awarded both state and federal tax credits as well as loans. This renovation allows Housing Trust of Rutland County to preserve 17 affordable apartments for seniors while significantly improving the energy-efficiency of the complex.
Taylor Street housing and transit center construction begins
Senator Patrick Leahy joined Governor Phil Scott, VHFA Deputy Director Maura Collins, and many supporters in Montpelier on Tuesday to celebrate the groundbreaking of the 1 Taylor Street affordable housing project. The project, sponsored by Housing Vermont and Downstreet Housing & Community Development, will create 19 affordable apartments for low-income Vermonters as part of a 30 unit development incorporating a new city transit center. The project was funded in part by tax credits and a loan awarded by VHFA.
Lawmakers and supporters celebrate groundbreaking of French Block in Montpelier
Senator Patrick Leahy and Congressman Peter Welch joined representatives from the Vermont Legislature, housing advocates, and many other supporters in downtown Montpelier on Tuesday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the French Block affordable housing project. The project, which is a joint effort between Housing Vermont and Downstreet Housing & Community Development, will rehabilitate a historic building to create 14 affordable apartments for low-income Vermonters and four market-rate apartments.
Windy Hollow co-op purchases mobile home community with help from VHFA
Residents of Windy Hollow Cooperative in Castleton are celebrating the successful purchase of their mobile home park, which was assisted by Vermont Housing Finance Agency. The creation of the housing co-op will help retain affordable homes for 44 households.
Allard Square construction is underway
Cathedral Square Corporation, affordable housing partners and South Burlington officials came together this week to celebrate the start of construction of Allard Square.
The 39-unit apartment building is expected to be open to residents this time next year, with rents for the majority of units being well below market rate.
Applegate affordable apartments revamped for sustainability
Plans were made over two years ago to make renovations to Applegate Apartments, located in Bennington, VT. It's one of Vermont's largest affordable housing developments and threatened by rising fuel costs before improvements were made. The complex paid $175,000 a year on fuel costs, which required rent to rise, and owners were worried that tenants would not be able to keep up.
Last week, the Applegate community celebrated the addition of a new "central biomass plant" which replaced the need for 23 oil burners - one for each building. The project also included a insulated underground pipeline that delivers hot water to all of the buildings.
Elm Place ribbon cutting
Governor Phil Scott joined by Executive Director Sarah Carpenter and others on June 5, cut the ribbon on the newly-constructed, 28,000 square foot Elm Place, an affordable residence for seniors, located in Milton.
Elm Place is considered a “passive house” due to its impressive energy savings. Some of these savings come from its cold climate air source heat pumps, a rooftop solar array and LED lighting. A few of Elm Place amenities include an elevator, exercise room, on-site storage, kitchen, lounge, laundry facilities, covered parking and an outdoor courtyard, including garden beds for resident use.
Red Clover Commons ribbon cutting
Executive Director Sarah Carpenter joined Brattleboro Housing Partnerships and other agencies in Brattleboro, on May 25, 2017 to celebrate the opening of Red Clover Commons, a newly constructed 55-unit building for seniors and people with disabilities. These homes are intended to replace units at Melrose Place which were severely damaged from Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011.
The project will offer support for residents through the Support and Services at Home program (SASH). The project incorporated numerous energy efficient features including a new geothermal heating and cooling system. The building is centrally located near various public services such as public transportation, shopping and the hospital.
